Este filme conta a história de Bartleby Gaines, um rapaz que se inscreve em 8 universidades mas é rejeitado por todas. Ele fica então sem saber o que dizer aos pais que sonham com um bom futuro para o filho.

Mais tarde Bartleby começa a aperceber-se que alguns dos seus amigos também foram rejeitados, por isso resolvem criar uma faculdade falsa. Eles reúnem-se e criam uma faculdade no lugar de um antigo manicómio, e quando se apercebem a faculdade já foi descoberta por muitos outros rejeitados.

Com a grande aderência a falsa faculdade começa a ser cada vez mais notada, por isso Bartleby vai tentar fazer com que South Harmon Instituto de Tecnologia (SHIT), se torne uma faculdade real.
